As a result of transitioning from a Chinese to a Western culture, I have noticed a distinct change in my visual and tactile understanding of perceptions, particularly of space. As a consequence, I am interested in investigating ways that culture and society impact on individuals' perceptions. My work explores drawing as performance that demonstrates a process of searching in relation to perceptions of experience, time, place and self.
Drawing is not simply making marks on paper nor is it just rendering a depiction of what one sees. The act of drawng is an act of searching, understanding, finding, learning, changing and discovering what's around you. It's an active and more intensive process of analysing, deciphering and responding to the environment.
I believe that perceptions and ideas are accumulative and they rely upon what existing ideas and perceptions you have. Time is very important in my work as over time my work changes and so do the perception and ideas of both me and my audience. Traces of the old marks represent the previous ideas and those old marks affect the future ones. So, the old marks on the paper help create the newer marks on the paper. My work uses drawing performance to depict the importance of change, learning, and discovery.
